What You Will Do:

 

The Career Advisor supports and empowers NLU students and alumni in achieving career readiness and success. This role provides advising, career resources, and programming across the full spectrum of career development—career and major exploration, skills development, job search strategies, and graduate/professional planning. Career Advisors collaborate with faculty, staff, employers, and alumni to connect students with opportunities that build career skills and confidence. Advisors are expected to integrate equity, inclusion, and industry best practices into their work, ensuring that all students—particularly those from historically underserved populations—are prepared for success.

 

This position reports to the Associate Director of Career Development and serves students across multiple modalities (mostly hybrid and online). The Career Advisor plays a key role in driving completion of career readiness milestones, employer engagement, and positive employment outcomes.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Advises students on career and major exploration, internship/job search strategies, and personal/professional goals
  • Develops and implements outreach strategies to promote career milestones and development activities, with a focus on high-need and online student populations, in collaboration with faculty, advisors, and success coaches
  • Collaborates with Employer Relations Managers to nurture employer relationships, promote events, and connect students to internships and job opportunities
  • Designs and facilitates workshops, class visits, and online programming to build career readiness skills and track student engagement
  • Assists with and attends Career Bridge events, including job fairs, networking programs, and student/alumni programming
  • Tracks and reports student career readiness milestones and employment outcomes in coordination with Career Development and Career Bridge
  • Attends networking functions and professional events to develop employer and community contacts while representing NLU’s mission and values

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, required.  Master's degree in higher education, counseling, career development or related field, preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in university career services, workforce development, or related field required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career services databases (e.g., Symplicity, Handshake, CSO, eRecruiting) and proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Advanced use of LinkedIn and other professional networking platforms for student advising and employer engagement
  • Experience designing and delivering workshops, events, and/or online learning modules
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting historically underserved student populations
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and create a positive, team-focused environment
  • Adjusts quickly to changing conditions and maintains a solutions-focused approach
  • Demonstrated record of success setting and achieving goals, overcoming challenges, and follow-through

The salary range of the grade for this position is $47,635 to $66,311 annually.  Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.  Offers are based on multiple factors permitted by law, including but not limited to: budgetary considerations, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, market considerations, tenure and standing with the university (applicable to current employees), and internal equity.
