What You Will Do:

This position is necessary for the teaching of PACE student’s life skills, including organization, time management, money management, personal hygiene, and roommate relationship skills.  Will develop a working relationship with an assigned case load of students. Will teach additional classes on campus that coincide with ILS Appointments and dorm tasks.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Teaches basic and more advanced skills needed for apartment living. Builds on previously acquired life skills, assisting students with instruction in a variety of skills, from money management and bill paying to cooking and cleaning, shopping and roommate relation issues. Oversees RLAs in regards to coordinating ILS appointments and scheduling.
  • Teaches life skills-based classes (grocery shopping, health and wellness, assertiveness, disability awareness, technology) according to Program's needs.
  • Actively participates, as part of the dorm team, in all staff meetings and Program events throughout the year.
  • Class prep time for school week.
  • Time spent grading student’s assignments.
  • Completes student records, logs, and reports as required, including mentoring and assisting students with class preparation.
  • Staff meetings and trainings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Service or related field.
  • One plus (1+) year(s) experience in life skills, student affairs, camp or recreational programs, and/or in counseling, teaching programs, and young adults with disabilities.
  • A strong belief that students with disabilities can be successful and learn to be independent.
  • Self-starter who can work with flexible hours and time schedule.

 

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel Requirements:

Ability to move or lift boxes up to 50lbs. Must have use of a car or public transportation as high percentage of work time is spent with students at their residences at the off-campus housing located approximately 5 minutes from the NLU Chicago Campus. The PACE program is a non-traditional work environment. Must be able to be flexible with work hours, including weekend and evening hours.  Time management and respect for students while working in the students' personal space. There may be calls from students at unscheduled times

The salary range of the grade for this position is $19.71 to $27.60 per hour (typical workweek is 37.5 hours).  Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.  Offers are based on multiple factors permitted by law, including but not limited to: budgetary considerations, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, market considerations, tenure and standing with the university (applicable to current employees), and internal equity.
