Overview

THE OPPORTUNITY

 

This full time 12-month faculty position will teach in both the on-ground BSN program and in the Center for Simulation in the Foundations of Nursing Practice lab.  Additionally, under the direction of the Executive Director of Nursing and the Director of Simulation and Interprofessional Education this faculty will assist with development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the Foundations Lab and Simulation curricula.  The Simulation Faculty will also engage in running simulations as directed by the Director of the CSIE. The Simulation Faculty will also collaborate and work in conjunction with the Simulation Technician to set up for labs and simulation.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with Director CSIE, Simulation Technician and other stakeholders to develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate foundations labs and simulation-based education and events, learning objectives, case scenarios, program planning, evaluation tools and other needs of CSIE.
  • Participate in event and scenario planning meetings to provide curriculum and learning objective expertise consistent with capabilities and limitations of Clinical Simulation Program staff, equipment and facilities to meet CSIE needs.
  • Collaborate with Director CSIE to ensure simulation activities are properly mapped to course objectives and program outcomes with integration across the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Nursing, Director of Simulation and Interprofessional Education, Simulation Technician, and faculty to achieve consistent, integrated application of simulation-based education and events, research and other activities with the mission, strategic priorities and objectives of the School of Nursing including (and not limited to) excellent patient care, enhanced safety, and improved outcome metrics across the system.
  • Facilitate structured debriefings using evidence-based frameworks (e.g., Debriefing with Good Judgment or PEARLS) to promote reflective learning and clinical reasoning.
  • Work collaboratively to conduct new faculty orientation on principles of simulation, educational techniques, debrief, and other activities as appropriate. Instruct faculty and others on technical aspects of operating simulators and equipment.
  • Maintain open communication with faculty and staff working in the School of Nursing.
  • Ensure appropriate fidelity and realism of simulation events including moulage, equipment, supplies, rooms & furniture to meet simulation-based learning objectives.
  • Assure educational programs are in compliance with standards set forth by the appropriate accrediting bodies.
  • Assist with set up of simulation scenarios and equipment.
  • Participate in running simulate events and scenarios as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with the Director CSIE develop and facilitate interprofessional simulation events with other disciplines within the university community to build teamwork and communication.
  • Regularly review evaluation data from learners, faculty and staff to revise simulation experiences and align with best practices from INACSL, Standards of Best Practice and NLN/SSH.
  • Explore and in collaboration with Director CSIE pilot emerging technologies (e.g., virtual simulation, augmented reality, AI-driven case simulations) to advance simulation fidelity and learner engagement.
  • Participate in institutional efforts toward obtaining and/or maintaining simulation center accreditation from agencies such as the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) or INACSL.
  • In collaboration with Director CSIE design and implement individualized simulation-based remediation plans for students struggling with clinical performance or skill acquisition.
  • Teach assigned course workload.

 

Technical:

  • Develop technical proficiency with basic aspects of the operation, maintenance, support, troubleshooting, repair and replacement needs for all simulation equipment.
  • Participate in preventative maintenance of equipment according to manufacturers’ recommendations and scheduled maintenance to ensure that equipment is operational.
  • Be able to lift and maneuver manikins weighing 50+ pounds.

Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Simulation or related field
  • Minimum 2 years of recent clinical experience
  • Unencumbered Illinois nursing license or ability to obtain

 

Preferred:

  • Previous teaching experience in nursing or simulation-based education
  • Experience leading simulation scenario design and debriefing
  • Familiarity with simulation platforms (e.g., Laerdal LLEAP, SimCapture, CAE Maestro)
  • Certification in simulation education or willingness to obtain within 1 year such as CHSE or CHSOS
  • Experience with online/virtual simulation tools (e.g., vSim, SimX)
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards from INACSL, NLN and SSH
