What You Will Do:

 

Reporting to the Director of the Centro de Excelencia at NLU, this role will be responsible for coordinating all program activities related to the success of Latinx graduate students including recruitment, retention/graduation and career transition support. Working collaboratively with other departments, ensures highly effective, integrated support services supporting academic and scholarly outcomes for Latinx graduate students in support of the goals and objectives of NLU's Promoting Postbaccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans (PPOHA) program, a grant from the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Division of the Department of Education.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides overall strategic coordination to the CLAVE Graduate Student Institute overseeing daily operations that involve providing support to students, working with key stakeholders in developing culturally relevant and intentional programming that builds strong support networks for students and captures student learning outcomes via executing CLAVE Graduate Student Open Houses, Graduate Student Success Summits, and CLAVE community spaces. Provides mentorship and individualized, culturally relevant support to Latinx and underrepresented graduate students, engaging them via CLAVE programming and connecting them with appropriate services to ensure academic, personal, and other forms of support.
  • Collaborates with faculty mentors to implement the CLAVE Doctoral Fellowship experience and supports the CLAVE doctoral fellows. This includes planning monthly cohort meetings, tracking fellows’ program participation to ensure engagement and achievement of outlined outcomes, tracking expenditures, and collaborating with CLAVE team to assess and ensure CLAVE doctoral fellows’ academic and scholarly outcomes. Available to support this programming outside of traditional work hours.
  • Cultivates relationships with internal and external stakeholders to outreach and recruit Latina/o/x and underrepresented graduate students in order to meet grant goals. Serve as main contact for CLAVE partnerships, build awareness and visibility of CLAVE, and work collaboratively with partner stakeholders to grow the Latina/o/x Higher Education Network to support recruitment objectives and establish a community of shared best practices.
  • Represents the University and the CLAVE Graduate Student Institute in NLU professional meetings, tabling events, and functions related to Hispanic-Serving Institution matters that may take place outside of traditional work hours. Advances the institution’s reputation as an HSI and Minority-Serving Institution by providing logistical supports to events aligning to HSI activities (e.g, HSI Week, Latina/o/x Heritage programming, Latina/o/x Graduation, etc.). Available and able to travel to other campuses as needed
  • Collaborates and provides support to the Centro de Excelencia in its offerings of cultural programming through-out the year.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned, and within the scope of responsibilities for the incumbent, to ensure appropriate execution of grant, program and Division activities (e.g. support on website content on graduate student programming, team support for Division efforts)

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • 1-3 years of related work experience required serving Latinx students in a higher education setting.
  • 1-3 years of demonstrated competency to communicate effectively in a culturally responsive way that shows understanding of the challenges Latina/o/x students face in higher education.
  • 1-3 years of proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Excel, Outlook, and social media skills and utilization to reach target audience.
  • 1-3 years demonstrated experience in planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating student activities and events
  • Detail Orientation/Focus: Has established a track record of producing work that is highly accurate, demonstrates attention to detail and reflects well on the organization. Is personally committed to high quality work and encourages others to have similar standards.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Communicates effectively and appropriately. Uses good judgement as to what to communicate to whom as well as the best way to get that accomplished. Speaks in a clear and credible manner, selecting the right tone for the situation and audience. Listens to others and allows them to make their point.
  • Team Orientation: Establishes an environment that creates incentives for, and eliminates barriers to, a team environment. For example, articulates common goals, communicates how individual roles contribute to team success, provides both clear direction and sufficient resources while removing or reducing obstacles to team success.
