THE OPPORTUNITY
In November 2021, National Louis University launched a new initiative called Accelerate U focused on workforce training for local, upwardly-mobile jobs and careers. A path-breaking “job first higher education” model, our work connects learners and employers, linking economic stability for participants with the diverse talent pipeline needs of employers. Accelerate U works closely with employer partners to build affordable (Pell-eligible) academic and training pathways that 1) bridge to an in-demand job in 3-6 months, 2) lead to an industry-recognized credential, 3) focus on technical and ”durable”/career readiness skill development, 4) include NLU coaching, wraparound supports, and a meaningful cohort-based experience, and 5) allow participants to earn up to 30 college credits that seamlessly “stack” into a bachelor’s degree. The #1 outcome we care about is the number of people who start our programs and find sustainable employment within three months of completing it. About National Louis University and Accelerate U
National Louis University (NLU), founded in 1886, is a private, non-profit university based in Chicago, IL serving nearly 10,000 students across five colleges. In November 2020, the University launched Accelerate U, a new division at the university offering rapid pathways to high-demand skills, post-secondary degrees, and an upwardly-mobile job and career. The Accelerate U team works with employers and non-profit operators to build affordable academic and training pathways that 1) lead to an industry-recognized credential/certificate, 2) bridge to an in-demand, upwardly-mobile job, 3) include coaching and wraparound supports, and 4) grant participants Pell-eligible college credit that can build to a bachelor’s degree.
Our first training credential - a Medical Assistant Certification - is 24 weeks long followed by a 160-hour externship with one of our employer hospital or health clinic partners. Learners earn a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential from National Healthcareer Association (NHA) credential along with 30 college credits that can be applied towards a bachelor’s degree. Program participants work with their instructors and a coach throughout the experience and interview with Accelerate U’s healthcare employer partners for a full-time job immediately following program completion.
This work has never been more important, especially in light of the effects of COVID-19. Our track record of innovation and community service; our deep commitment to equity and access (especially for first-generation learners of color); and our considerable experience with online teaching and flexible programming position us well nationally to lead in this transformational work.
This is the right role for you if:
You are committed to equity, access, and building economic mobility.
You understand that economic disparity and income inequality are destabilizing forces for a true democracy. You know the power of a great education - one that catapults a learner into new, choice-filled opportunities. You also know that too many talented, high-potential people get left out, overlooked, or skipped over when it comes to opportunities. You want to break down those barriers, destroy those misconceptions, and prepare and connect extraordinarily talented people with the opportunities they deserve.
You are driven to succeed.
You are passionate about serving all Accelerate U participants including first-generation learners and others motivated by the challenge of becoming a medical assistant. You want to take everything you know about being a medical assistant and translate it, through the Accelerate U curriculum, to others. You’re agile, creative, flexible and engaging in how you teach - ready to figure out the exact right way to reach each learner. You believe all Accelerate U learners can be successful and that your job is to transform their motivation into the skills and mindset of a great medical assistant.
You are a great teacher.
You love every part of teaching medical assisting: the technical stuff, of course, but also the professional skills, mindsets, habits that are essential for success in a hospital or health clinic. You’re excited to teach across different mediums - synchronously over Zoom, asynchronously on our learning management system, one-on-one with individual learners or small groups, etc. You’re eager for feedback and always trying to get better. You’re excited to collaborate with others such as professional coaches, peer instructors, and the Accelerate U team.
You want to create a community - a sense of belonging - for every learner.
You understand learners are not passive enrollees in our program, but active drivers of their own learning, and that learners in our program support the learning of one another: exploring content together, encouraging one another, and holding each other accountable on their way to full-time work. (You may even work along-side program alumni who have returned to be coaches or instructors.) As an instructor, you will create a space for learners to build “social capital” among their colleagues so that they head into work with a meaningful, professional network.

Job Summary:
This role has the primary responsibility of supporting undergraduate teacher candidates as they enter the final stages of their preparation to become teachers. The Teacher Development Coach is deeply committed to culturally responsive pedagogy and works to instill a deep understanding and motivation to enact culturally relevant and responsive teaching within NLU students entering the field.
Coaches help teacher candidates learn how to implement lessons, practice classroom management, develop effective assessments, and plan for instruction using appropriate technologies. The Teacher Development Coach guides scholars using a 100% virtual field coaching model. Through high leverage practices, the Coach provides feedback to students on their teaching through the use of video recordings. The Coach engages in multiple sessions of reflective practice with novice teachers and involves mentor teachers in providing constructive feedback to students as they practice in the field.
Intrinsic to this role is also the development of strong mentor teachers who are well prepared to support NLU scholars in the field. Coaches help to plan Communities of Practice (COP) with partner schools by creating support for mentor teachers where needed and requested. Working closely with the Project Director for the DHSI Title V Grant and the Associate Director of Field Coaching and Teacher Development, full time coaches help to present professional development sessions, provide training/onboarding of mentor teachers to the UG ED Prep. model, and conduct occasional field visits to partner schools, as appropriate.
The Teacher Development Coach is the teacher candidate’s liaison to all of the wraparound, holistic supports available, including multilingual academic/writing and content test support. Each full time Coach carries a caseload of student teachers as well as a small caseload of students who require additional support (as identified through the Student Support Planning process) in our efforts to help students be successful and persist to and through graduation. Support Plan case management may include regular meetings with students to help students meet their academic and field goals and/or connecting students to available resources to them in the Department and university.
Teacher Development Coaches are an important part of the faculty team. As front-line team members, they are often the first to see trends in the field with teacher candidates and can help to identify barriers to student success. They inform curricular revision by providing quantitative and qualitative data to faculty and department leadership based on their experiences coaching students. Each Coach is connected to a specific Department Chair in the Department, as a way to create systems of communication and continuous improvement. This role helps to define best practices in field experience for the Department and also supports the instruction within the department by helping students make connections in the field to their coursework. Teacher Development Coaches report significant concerns about field sites and/or students to department leadership when applicable and provide insight into areas of strength and opportunities for growth in the overall preparation program.

The University
National Louis University was founded on the principle that a quality education can transform lives, careers, and communities. More than 130 years ago, education pioneer and social reformer Elizabeth Harrison opened a kindergarten training school to promote early childhood education, then considered a radical idea. Harrison’s groundbreaking work helped launch the National Parent-Teacher Association and the Head Start program, and the National College of Education (NCE) became the first university in Illinois to offer a four-year teaching degree. Thanks to a large donation from philanthropist Michael W. Louis, the school added two more colleges and became National Louis University in 1990. NLU mission is to provide access to quality higher education that nurtures opportunity for students through innovative teaching, scholarship, community engagement and service excellence. Our Florida campus is located in Tampa, Florida minutes from downtown and the international airport.
